Let your restaurant data tell us where the money is actually going.
Signal analyzes real restaurant operating data to uncover pricing problems, discount leakage, modifier issues, item-mix patterns, process friction, and other places where revenue or margin may be quietly slipping away.
What Signal looks for
Instead of generic summary dashboards that leave you wondering what to do next, Signal examines the underlying transactions to identify specific friction points and margin leaks.
Pricing
- Items priced inconsistently across channels or menus
- Modifier pricing that no longer makes sense against food cost
- Bundles or add-ons that inadvertently reduce overall margin
Discounts & Comps
- Discounts being used more broadly than originally intended
- Uncapped percentage discounts creating larger losses than fixed-dollar offers
- Comp patterns that indicate training or shift-level process problems
Menu & Item Mix
- High-volume items with unexpectedly weak margin contribution
- Add-ons that guests routinely buy but the restaurant underprices
- Items taking up significant kitchen effort without enough financial return
Operational Process
- Problems that appear financial on P&Ls but are actually procedural
- Staff workflows creating unnecessary discounts, voids, or kitchen rework
- System configuration working against how the team actually runs service
Opportunity Prioritization
- What should be fixed immediately on the next schedule
- What should be monitored over the next 60 days before changing
- What looks suspicious on paper but is probably not worth rebuilding
The point is not just finding numbers. It is deciding what they actually mean.
A report that simply spits out totals leaves all the heavy lifting to the operator. Signal connects raw numbers to operational shift reality so you can make informed decisions.
Discount Structure: Cap vs. Percentage Leakage
Both promotions sound similar operationally and might seem interchangeable in marketing meetings. But on a $120 dinner check, the 10% discount gives away $12.00, whereas the $5 fixed reward preserves $7.00 of margin while delivering the same perceived goodwill to the guest. On large catering or party checks, uncapped discounts can erode hundreds of dollars in profit.
Modifier Pricing: Small Useful Tweaks Over Wholesale Overhauls
When margins compress, standard advice often suggests re-engineering the entire menu or raising all prices across the board. In reality, transaction logs often show that base entree pricing is completely sound—the leak is coming from 4 or 5 high-volume kitchen additions (bacon, extra avocado, double protein, dairy substitutions) that are either uncharged in kitchen notes or priced below ingredient cost.
Discount Misuse: Person Problem vs. Process Problem
If audit logs show discounts or voids concentrating around a specific station, the instinctive reaction might be staff discipline. But if three servers across different shifts show the exact same pattern, the issue is almost never bad intent. It is usually an ambiguous POS screen layout, lack of a dedicated button for a split plate, or conflicting manager instructions during a rush.
What you may receive
The exact scope of your report depends on your available data and the specific questions you want answered. We agree on the focus before any review begins.
Depending on whether we examine check-level detail, modifier records, menu item mix, or labor schedules, your tailored brief may include:
- Discount & comp analysis
- Pricing & modifier analysis
- Item-mix & margin patterns
- Revenue leakage calculations
- Operational process findings
- Prioritized recommendations
- Concrete shift-level examples
- Suggested next floor checks
- Areas where no action is needed
You do not have to hand over the keys to your POS.
Restaurants can provide exported reports, spreadsheets, PDFs, CSV files, or other relevant operating data directly. If exporting everything manually is inconvenient, I can also work from temporary, restricted export-only access to the relevant system when the platform supports it.
Option 1: Send exported reports
You pull standard reports directly from your POS back-office and upload the raw files securely:
- Product mix and item sales summaries
- Discount, comp, and void audit logs
- Menu item and modifier configuration exports
- Modifier sales and kitchen modifier frequency
- Labor summaries or hourly sales when relevant
Option 2: Temporary restricted access
Export-only or similarly limited access when supported by your platform (e.g. Toast, Square):
- Read-only or reporting-only role assignment
- No administrative privileges or payment settings
- Used solely to extract the agreed report files
- Revoked immediately after data extraction is complete
- No ongoing or background account connection
The specific data requested will depend on the question being analyzed and the restaurant's systems.
How it works
The data partnership is a straightforward, collaborative process designed to respect your time and operational rhythm.
Fit
We confirm your restaurant and available data are a useful match for the current pilot stage.
Data
You provide exports or temporary restricted access to pull the specific reports we agreed upon.
Analysis
Signal reviews the data, models financial impact, and separates meaningful patterns from ordinary noise.
Report & Feedback
You receive the agreed report and tell me what was useful, confusing, incomplete, or wrong. Feedback is part of the partnership.
Why I am doing this
Signal is currently in a pilot stage. Real restaurant operating data helps improve the analysis far more than synthetic examples can.
The goal is not to collect as much data as possible. The goal is to test whether Signal can consistently identify useful, defensible findings that restaurant operators can actually act on.
Your feedback helps improve both the analysis and the way the findings are communicated so they remain practical and grounded in shift reality.
Not every restaurant will be a fit.
Participation is intentionally limited. Selection depends on operating structure, POS or reporting systems, available data, and whether the restaurant presents a useful analytical case.
- Independent restaurants with active shift management
- Multi-unit operators seeking operational consistency
- Restaurants with meaningful historical POS data
- Businesses utilizing discounts, comps, modifiers, or promos
- Operators actively trying to understand margin leaks
Note: You do not need to be a large operation or multi-million-dollar venue to qualify. Small, tightly run independent restaurants often yield the clearest analytical insights.
